Cover type plant are often over looked when most talk about improving wildlife habitat.  It is essential to provide some cover for wildlife to give them a place to feel safe and hide.

Bulrush

Scirpus validus

Good fish cover and excellent for erosion control.  Makes excellent duck blinds.  Ideal for borders of fish ponds to provide good cover for game fish.  Due to the sturdy stalk and root system, Bulrush will break wave action to prevent erosion and providing a buffer which allows other aquatic plant to gain a foothold and grow.

Spike Rush

Eleocharis acicularis

A perennial with tufts of mostly leafless, erect stem from slender, creeping or matted rootstocks.  Grows in moist soils to 3 inches of water.  Price List

Scirpus Americans

Scirpus Americans.  A tall slender, pencil-like rush.  Grows 3 to 4 foot tall.  Grows best in shallow water up to 2 feet depth.  Usually found on sandy shores and along seashores. Will tolerate saline or brackish waters.  Price List

This plant grows in wet areas and sometimes in shallow water in both fresh and brackish tidal marshes. It can be found in low savannas, thin woods and open meadows as well as along the edges of swamps, rivers banks.  It is a good alternative to planting Cattails as it is not as aggressive as the Cattails are.  Grows 3 to 4 feet tall and makes ideal nesting for wild ducks and pheasants.
